Today I’ve discovered this nice tool: http://ditaa.sourceforge.net/

ditaa is a small command-line utility written in Java, that can convert diagrams 
drawn using ascii art ('drawings' that contain characters that resemble lines like | / - ), 
into proper bitmap graphics.

Here there are some kernel patches (from 2.6.12 to 2.6.15) for Dell Inspiron 9300, they works also with Inspiron 6000:
